Our next ﬁeld trip will be on Tuesday - Jan. 24, to the National Aviary. See the nation's Bird Zoo! There are more than 500 birds from around the world at the aviary: http://www.aviary.org.

We will meet at 10am in the Parking lot at the National Aviary. The address is 700 Arch Street, Pittsburgh, PA, 15212.

Normal Admission is $13. but if we are a group of 15 or more, each of us will just pay $9.

Help trainers feed the water birds their morning snack at 10:30 in the Wetlands Exhibit and the tropical birds at 11:00 in the Tropical Forest Exhibit. You could also buy a cup of nectar to feed the lorikeets at 11:30. Kids are more than welcome!

December 14:Hartwood Acres Mansion Tour
We will go to Hartwood Acres, an old historic mansion decorated for Christmas in Hampton (http://www.friendsofhartwood.org/mansion.asp). We will have lunch at the near by Hartwood Restaurant (http://www.hartwoodrestaurant.com/) afterwards. The cost for the tour is $6 and children are welcome. Lunch will be $12- $15.

December 10: Christmas Market at the Old Economy Village
We will meet at the Old Economy Village Visitors Center at 2pm.

WHERE: Squirrel Hill
WHEN: Wednesday November 16th, 10am-noon or after lunch

We will meet in front of Color me mine (http://www.pittsburgh.colormemine.com/) at 10am. The address is 5887 Forbes Ave, Pittsburgh, Pa, 15217. Then we will walk the shopping streets of Squirrel Hill for about 1 hour.

At 11:15am, we will be back at Color me mine.
We have a reservation for the party room. Color me mine is a place, where you can paint pottery. They have mugs, plates, vases, Christmas ornaments, Christmas stuff, plattern and so on. Time for some Christmas presents... Simone will pick up everything and bring it to the Thursday meeting one week later.

The cost is $9 for each adult, $7 for children, which covers the colors, glaze and burning for all the things you do that day.

Additionally you have to pay the mugs, plates, bowls or whatever you pick.
The lady gave me some pricing, but not all. Here are some examples: a mug is $12, a plate is $14.25 and a bowl is $12. She said there are some smaller things as well.

The more you do, the cheaper every piece gets. We do not really have a time limit.

If you are hungry and want to join us, we will go to Aladdin's eatery (http://www.aladdinseatery.com/), which is at the opposite side of the street. It will be around 12.30 or 1 pm.

October Field Trip -Ligonier and the Laurel Highlands

Where: Ligonier and the Laurel Highlands

When:  Wednesday, October 19, 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM

Come and enjoy the beautiful Laurel Highlands in their Fall color; visit Fort Ligonier (http://fortligonier.org/) where George Washington was once stationed;  eat lunch at a Victorian mansion in historic Ligonier.  The next field trip will take in all of these and more.  Fort Ligonier was in use during the French and Indian War (1758 - 1766).   We will tour the Fort and visit the galleries and exhibits in the museum (Cost: Adults $8.00, children 5 and under Free). We will then go to lunch at the Ligonier Tavern (http://www.ligoniertavern.com/) which serves soups, salads, sandwiches and regular entrees.  If there is time, we will stroll the streets of picturesque Ligonier.

Join us on our first field trips of the year!

First Date: Wednesday, September 21st. 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM

Sharon says: See the very best view of the city, sail along the Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio rivers and eat at that American experience the Hard Rock Café.

We will start the first field trip of the year with a ride in the funicular railway to the top of Mt. Washington (Cost $2.25 each way).

Following this, we will set sail on the Gateway Clipper for a one hour boat ride (12:15 – 1:15) on Pittsburgh's rivers. You will be able to sit back and relax and listen as the captain points out the landmarks of the city (Cost $12.50 for adults, $8.50 for children three years and over).

We will end our day out with lunch at the Hard Rock Café where you can get true American burgers, salads, sandwiches and regular entrees.

Second Date: Sunday, September 25.

Council of the Three Rivers Native American POW-WOW -- 120 Charles Street, Pittsburgh, 15238.

Ann says: We can meet at my house at noon and go as a group to the site...This is an activity for the entire family... dance, crafts, food and lots of fun.

We will have a sign up sheet at the first and second meetings to include who would need a ride, phone numbers, etc.

More details will be announced at the meetings.

2011/2012: Field Trip Plan

The field trip info isnt quite right--Each month there will be a field trip suitable for all ages. Additional excursions are also planned that might be age/interest specific...

Our first field trip will be a Three Rivers Boat tour in September. October will be a trip to Fort Ligoneer ; November is a walking tour of Squirrel Hill and for the Holidays in December, we will visit the Mansion at Hartwood Acres with lunch to follow.. Also, we will plan on attending the Native American Pow Wow at the Indian Reservation in Dorseyville, an apple picking day, the Christmas market in Harmony and skating at PPG place.

We will announce details in the Thursday meetings.
