January Field Trip

January 21 – Field trip: Carnegie museum of Art and Natural History

Join us to visit 2 greats museums in Pittsburgh: the Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Museum of Natural History. They are amazing!

In the Museum of Art, the permanent collection of more than 35,000 objects features a broad spectrum of visual arts, including painting and sculpture; prints and drawings; photographs and more. Three temporary exhibits will take place during our visit:

• Teenie Harris Photographs: Civil Rights Perspectives;
• A definitive retrospective of the photographer Duane Michals and
• A selection of his eclectic personal collection.

In the Museum of Natural History, you’ll have the opportunity to see several exhibits:

• Geology & Paleontology (Dinosaurs, Hall of Minerals and Gems, Ice Age Animals),
• Wildlife & Ecology (Hall of African and North American Wildlife, Botany Hall, Population Impact) and
• Anthropology (Hall of Ancien Egypt, Hall of Artic Life, Hall of American Indians).

Meeting time & place: Inside the Museum at 10 a.m. Use the main entrance on 4400 Forbes Avenue (10 min walk from the First Baptist Church)
Cost: Probably free!
Lunch: At 12h30 in “The Carnegie Cafe” located inside the museum.

You can stay in the museum after your lunch if you didn’t have time to finish your visit!

December Field Trip

December 16 – Clayton House

The December tour is a visit to Clayton, the mansion of Henry Clay Frick, a wealthy American industrialist from the early 20th century. The decoration throughout the mansion shows the traditional Christmas festivities during the Golden Age. 

After the tour we will find a nice restaurant nearby for an optional lunch together. 

Meeting time & place:10 a.m. at First Baptist Church - 159 N. Bellefield Avenue.

For Those who drive on their own directly to the Frick mansion will meet at 10:30 at the visitor center. Volunteer carpool drivers are needed.

Tour begins at 11:00 for the first group and the next one at 11:30.

Lunch:  Together after the tour

(The cost of the lunch will vary depending on what you choose to order, and it is not included in the cost for the tour).

If people choose to visit the museums there instead of going to the restaurant, they may do so on their own. That means they will have to regroup for the transportation back to Oakland.

November Field Trip

November 25 – Wendell August Forge + Grove City Outlet

IWAP’s November trip will be a tour and shopping at the historic August Wendell Forge, about an hour drive from Pittsburgh. This company offers tours to see how hand-hammered metal objects are made. These unique items, such as dishes, jewelries and purses, are great souvenirs to take home.

Meeting time & place: 8:45 a.m. at First Baptist Church - 159 N. Bellefield Avenue – as we will leave promptly at 9:00 a.m.

Cost: Tour at Wendell August is free. Lunch to be paid individually per your order.

Lunch:  Together at the Eat & Park restaurant at Grove City. Lunch will be followed by more shopping at the Grove City Outlet Mall. We will return around 3:30 p.m.

Volunteer carpool drivers are needed!

October Field Trip

October 25 – Field trip to Trax Farms

October's field trip will be held on a Saturday, as it's fall festival at Trax Farms, which they celebrate on weekends only.

We’ll enjoy together a hayride to the pumpkin patch to pick-our-own pumpkin and see if we can find our way through the giant, 4-acre corn maze!

After meeting in front of the church we’ll go all together to Trax Farms. When we’ll arrive there we’ll register for the hayride and spend some time together in the field and in the corn maze.

IMPORTANT: Agree with the persons in your car to a meeting place for the departure from the farm and fix the hour of the meeting!

Children under 2 - FREE.
All persons who need a ride will have to pay $2. The money will be shared between the drivers for the gas cost.

Lunch:

We’ll meet at 12:30 near the picnic tables. You can bring your own picnic or buy something to eat over there. They have a special menu for the festival. After the lunch, you can spend more time at the festival and enjoy the activities or have a look inside the building and go in the different stores: antique shop, greenhouse, Home & Gift shop etc. The Upper St. Clair Jazz Band will be playing live music from 2 to 3 p.m.

September Field Trip

Field trip: Strip District & Penn Avenue

Meeting time & Place:
Tuesday, September 30th
9:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church - 159 N. Bellefield Avenue
10:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church - intersection between 21st St. and Smallman St.

Cost: Free
Parking: PPG public parking at 21st St. $5/day
Lunch: Around 12pm at Wholey's fish market

We will enjoy shopping in several grocery stores with international foods and walking around the Strip District in Penn Ave. Very interesting field trip for next month’s cooking classes.

May Field Trip

Tuesday, May 13 : Tour Ed Mine
Experience what it was like to be a coal miner in the 1850's and today. Your guides are experienced coal miners, who will treat you to an amazing, educational tour 160 feet below the Earth's surface.

This is a 1hour 30 minute guided tour, approx 30 minutes underground.
Underground temperature range 52-55 degrees bring a light jacket/sweater.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, no sandles.
Avoid wearing WHITE clothing.
Part of this tour is not suitable for baby strollers, small children should be able to walk, baby backpacks ok.
